A software engineer from the Chicago-based company Deloitte Network Engineering stole a computer system that housed confidential data and put it online for anyone to use, according to court documents.
An indictment unsealed Thursday says the former employee, who worked for Deloitts network engineering division, downloaded files and programs from the system and posted them online.
The company told investigators it was unable to stop the theft.
The indictment says that the company “assumed that it could not prevent” the theft, but was not able to get the employee’s IP address.
It says Deloitto employees could access and use the system by accessing a remote server and by creating a VPN.
The indictment says Delositte’s computer systems “have been accessed and used by unauthorized parties in violation of applicable company policies, including those regarding access to confidential company data.”
Deloiture’s network engineer pleaded guilty in September to unauthorized access to the company’s computers.
The company declined to comment.
