Cybersecurity engineers need to be highly educated and have a good work ethic, and they should know how to write a secure codebase, a top IT executive says.
In an interview with Fortune, Brian Saylor, executive vice president of cybersecurity for IT giant VMware, said the skills are essential.
“We know that people who know how and when to write secure code have a very high probability of being successful at the job,” he said.
We know we need to get our cyber engineers up to speed on everything from the cyber threats we’re facing to how we’re getting them up to date on the latest security developments.
“Saylor said that if a cybersecurity engineer doesn’t have the right background and experience, they could be doing more harm than good.
There are numerous ways to become a cybersecurity professional, Saylor said.
He recommends that a cyber security major take a three-month course to learn more about cyber security and its various levels, as well as a two-month program for the practical side of cybersecurity.
Then, he said, the best time to hire an engineer is during a transition, when new technologies and technologies are still being developed.
Sometime during the transition, the cyber security engineer should get a degree in computer science, a field where they should have the experience, Sathan said.
Saylor also recommended hiring cybersecurity graduates as a position of strength, rather than relying on existing graduates who have already achieved good results.
In addition, Sayers recommended a rigorous training regimen for cybersecurity engineers, particularly ones who want to work on new systems.
He said that training for cybersecurity professionals needs to be done in a highly structured way, in a controlled environment and with a strict schedule.
When a cybersecurity engineering student goes to work, he says, he or she should be able to go to a lab with other cyber security engineers, which could include a conference room and a test lab.
Once they’ve gotten the hang of the job, a cybersecurity analyst will take a detailed look at the system and see if there’s anything the students could be able help with.”
